Top 25 Beginner’s Tips and Tricks
With the influx of new players, it seems necessary to make this guide as the game has so many features that it can be hard to understand what to do and how to master every aspect of the game.
This guide will take you through some of the stuff that beginners should know and understand about the game, and how they can start getting to the really fun endgame stuff.
Picking A Server
The first order of business when you get into Ark Survival Evolved is deciding which server you’re going to be playing on. You could choose to play locally by yourself or split-screen but it is way better to play with other people.
When viewing all the servers you’ll have the option to see all the details about the server. In the server select screen, you can see whether a server is PVP or PVE focused, what the specific rates for everything are, and what the map details are.
The most important thing when viewing a map is to check out the gather, experience, and taming multipliers. These three things will impact your game immensely and will either make progression really easy or really hard.
The collection multiplier decides how much of a resource you’ll get when you collect it, the experience multiplier will decide how much EXP you’ll get from doing actions such as hunting and crafting, and the taming multiplier decides how quickly dinosaurs will be to tame.
Noting all of these down should be your first step for playing Ark Survival Evolved. If you are new to the game then I recommend servers with a high resource, exp, and taming multipliers.
To make things go a little smoother you should also pick a server that has dinosaur damage reduced so that you don’t immediately get merked.
Understand the Map Layout
Ark Survival Evolved maps typically have a very dependable layout. The game lays out the map according to difficulty with the north being the hardest and the south being the easiest. This information is important so that you know how to progress through the game.
If you’ve just started on the server then you should stick to the south but if you’ve progressed in that server then you can move on to taking on the north.
Start On The Beach
When joining a server for the first time, you should pick a spawn on the beach. The beach has low-level dinosaurs and isn’t as deadly as the rest of the map.
You should start there so that you can build yourself up before taking on the tougher dinosaurs. You can easily get a good start if you start here because the beach is tailored for beginners.
Level Yourself Up
A lot of the game is going to be inaccessible to you because to take on the tougher parts of the map you’re going to need to improve your attributes.
The game allows you to increase certain character stats like Health, Carrying Capacity (weight), and Melee Damage. These stats are incredibly important and they are going to be the key to dominating the map.
Research Engrams
The game doesn’t let you make everything in the game immediately. Most of the stuff is going to be locked behind levels and engram points. To unlock these engrams you’ll have to level up, earn points, and spend them in order to unlock the engrams.
You should pick and choose which ones seem the most useful to you and which ones you can live without.
Make Tools and Collect Resources
The first thing that you want to do when spawning in, is to go on the hunt for resources. You can gather resources by hand but using a tool is preferred. The better your tool, the more resources you’ll get so make sure to use tools when gathering resources.
Make a Base
You’ll want to make a base really early as you’re going to need it if you want to store resources, and more importantly, place a bed. The bed will act as a respawn point so make sure to place one down. It will help you get to your body quickly when you die, and you will die.
Be Prepared For Death
This is one thing that most new people aren’t accustomed to is how much you’ll die in the game. It is incredibly brutal and pulls no punches so don’t worry if you die.
You should get used to dying a lot, especially if you’re just starting out on the server. The one reason why death isn’t a setback in the game is because of two reasons. The first is that you can always go back to where you died and pick up all the stuff that you lost.
The game also lets you know where your body is on the map through beacons of light so you can use them to navigate back to your body easily.
Hunt Dodos and Coelacanth
The easiest things to hunt when starting out are dodos and coelacanth. Dodos are flightless birds that won’t attack you even if you attack them. They will try to run away but since they are so slow you can easily catch up and kill them.
They are also really abundant on the beach so finding them is really easy too. Coelacanth, on the other hand, you’ll find it in the ocean. They are small fish that are easy to chase after and don’t fight back when hunted. They are also an excellent source of food.
Be Extremely Wary of the Ocean
The ocean is a mean and deadly place, especially in deep waters. It contains megalodons and piranhas which will tear you apart in a matter of minutes. It also contains the Leedsichthys which is an enormous, untameable, ship-wrecking fish that will destroy your ship, no matter how good it is.
Make a Weapon ASAP
The game focuses a lot on fighting and you’re going to need a melee weapon if you expect to fend off dinosaurs. I recommend making a spear as fast as possible because it gives you a huge edge when fighting stuff. Later on, you can make a bow which is also extremely useful and will help you take out enemies at range.
Get Some Armor
There are many varieties of armor in the game but at the start, you can only make cloth armor. You should make it even though its protection level is low as it still negates some damage done to you. It is also useful for protecting against the elements.
Pay Attention to Status Effects
At the bottom right of your screen, you’ll often notice symbols that show the status effects that you currently have. These can range from being too hot, too cold, hungry, having a broken limb, poisoned, etc. These are important to take note of because they actually make you a lot less effective and you should take care of them as soon as you can.
Use the Map
The journal that you possess as a survivor on the island is incredibly important. It allows you to view the map and see where you are. It can be used to navigate the map and find your way back to your base if you get lost. It is also incredibly useful for finding your dead bodies.
Play Well With Others
One of the mechanics that Ark has is that of a tribe. You can make or join an already created tribe with other players. This is an incredibly important aspect because if you expect to succeed in this harsh world, you’re going to have to do it together.
Using the tribe mechanic you can easily identify friendly people and make sure you make it through.
Leveling Up is Easier in a Tribe
The tribe mechanic is also useful when it comes to leveling up. The game allows tribe members to get shared EXP. This means that if one of your tribe members gets EXP, you’ll get a portion of it too.
This is great because you can work on different stuff and still be rewarded with levels.
Specialize in Different Skills
If you’ve joined a tribe then you should all pick different engrams to learn. There aren’t enough points early on for you to be able to learn to make everything.
That is where the division of labor comes in. Pick different specialties such as tools, weapons, armor, and base parts so that you can make quick progress together.
Tame Dinosaurs
One of the major selling points of this game is that it allows you to tame and use dinosaurs for your own ends. That is one of the things that you should really focus on. By taming dinosaurs, you can have combat backup, get more resources, and traverse distances faster.
How to Tame
When starting out you can use a club to knock low-level dinosaurs unconscious and feed them in order to tame them. How fast they are tamed depends on the taming multiplier and what level the dinosaur is. Be careful though, unconscious dinosaurs are extremely vulnerable and can be killed by other ones.
Get a Triceratops
The triceratops is one of the dinosaurs that you’ll want to tame early. Getting one is easy as they are everywhere and can be tamed really easily. They usually travel in groups which is dangerous as all of them will attack you if you hit one of them, and they are really tough.
That is why you should wait until you have tranq arrows until you tame them. You can get them early on though and given their tank-like properties, this is one of the dinosaurs that you really want on your side.
Tame a Flyer
There are multiple flying dinosaurs in the game. They are one of the most useful dinosaurs to tame as they can carry you out of harm’s way with ease. They also allow you to carry stuff over long distances with ease.
Get an Argentavis
Argentavis are kind of like the Hippogriffs mentioned in Harry Potter. They are super fast flyers and can carry a lot of weight. They are harder to tame but are definitely worth it because they can carry a lot of weight which is incredible for a flyer. They are also adept at combat so you can’t go wrong getting one.
Pay the Herbivore Island a Visit
There are two islands in the game. Herbivore and carnivore islands. Each of the islands speaks for itself. Herbivore island is good if you want to start a farm base. There is an abundance of resources there and no aggressive dinosaurs to attack you.
Crystal and Metal Mountain
The mountain in the middle of the map is your best bet for getting crystal and metal. The nodes there are plentiful and if you have a flyer you can go to it really easily. You should also think about making a small base there. Be careful of the T-Rex population there though.
Use the Terrain to Your Advantage
A lot of the dinosaurs in the game aren’t good at dealing with the terrain in the game. If you manage to land on a rock formation that is inaccessible from the ground then you can safely shoot dinosaurs without putting yourself in danger. Be careful though as this is a risky maneuver. Rocks that seem safe can become dangerous really quickly.
